FAQs

What are adaptogen supplements?

Herbs and mushrooms fall into the adaptogen category when they help the body adapt to stressful situations and protect against stress-induced dysfunction. Adaptogens have been most commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda.

In order to be considered an adaptogen, the plant or mushroom must meet certain criteria:

  • Non-toxic in medicinal doses
  • Works through the HPA axis (aka the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis) which controls the body’s reactions to stress and other processes.
  • Must work on a cellular level to help support the cells’ ability to respond to stress.

What is the most powerful adaptogen?

Each adaptogen has different actions, so there isn’t one that is more powerful than the rest. Rather, each plant helps to target stress and supports other functions like immunity, energy, mental clarity, and skin.

What are the benefits of adaptogenic powders?

Adaptogenic powders and adaptogen supplements help to regulate the stress response and support overall wellbeing. These are some of the most common adaptogens and their benefits:

  • Ashwagandha: clinically shown to help reduce stress and regulate cortisol levels, enhance focus and mental stamina, and reduce irritability and stress-related cravings.*
  • Reishi: strengthens the heart and mind. It’s also a brain nourisher, immune supporter, and stress reliever.*
  • Shatavari: support healthy hormonal balance throughout each phase of life.*
  • Cordyceps: traditionally used to sustain energy and stamina, and encourage healthy lung capacity.*
  • Chaga: support a healthy immune system.* It’s also known to balance energy, help reduce fatigue, and increase mental sharpness.*

Do adaptogens really work?

Yes. We use clinical studies to inform our formulas. For example, our Ashwagandha has been clinically shown to reduce cortisol by 24%.

Should you take adaptogens every day?

Adaptogens are non-toxic so they’re safe to take daily. However, if you are currently pregnant or nursing, we recommend consulting a midwife, herbalist, or functional medicine doctor before taking adaptogen supplements. We also recommend consulting a medical practitioner prior to use if you have any preexisting conditions or are taking any cardiac, diabetic, or antidepressant medications, blood thinners, or digoxin.

What are adaptogen supplements?

Adaptogens are plants — roots, berries, leaves, and mushrooms — that learned to survive and thrive by adapting to external stressors. They help our bodies adapt to stress, too! Adaptogenic supplements can help bring us to homeostasis, which reduces the effects of acute and chronic stress like fatigue, irritability, and brain fog, giving us more calm, energy, and mental clarity.

Though they have been used for centuries in traditional healing practices like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the term “adaptogen” is neither ancient nor rooted in herbal medicine. It’s a modern label that was first used in 1961 by research scientist Dr. I. I. Brekhman. As he concluded through scientific measure, adaptogenic herbs are nontoxic plants that help the body adapt to stress on a cellular level.

In essence: If stress is dragging you down, adaptogen supplements will boost you up. If your body’s stress response drives you to the point of a fight-or-flight response, adaptogenic powders will help you stay calm and collected. Adaptogens like Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Ginseng, and Reishi don’t quash stress: rather, they promote the body’s ability to cope with stress and recover from it.
